Synopsis
Ruthless Romance (1984) — watch online on iFILM, Eldar Ryazanov's adaptation of Alexander Ostrovsky's play The Dowryless Bride, set in a provincial Volga town in the late 19th century. The cast: Larisa Guzeeva, Nikita Mikhalkov, Andrei Myagkov, Alisa Freindlich.
Larisa Ogudalova has no money and no prospects — only her looks and her feelings for the charming, wealthy shipowner Paratov. Nikita Mikhalkov plays him as a man who takes exactly what he wants and disappears without a word: he courts Larisa, then leaves her. Out of hurt and desperation she agrees to marry the petty, jealous Karandyshev. Andrei Myagkov gives him a portrait of wounded pride that tips into something much darker.
Ryazanov doesn't soften Ostrovsky's verdict. The chemistry between Guzeeva and Mikhalkov carries the film to a place where you keep hoping it ends differently, knowing it won't. Stream Ruthless Romance (1984) online on iFILM.
