Synopsis

The Cuckoo (Кукушка, 2002) is Aleksandr Rogozhkin's war film, and you can watch it online on iFILM. It tells a bitter, surprisingly funny story about war that never shows a single battle. It's autumn 1944, Finland is days from leaving the conflict, and in the empty far north three people meet who, by every rule, ought to kill one another.

Veikko, a young Finn, has been chained to a rock and abandoned in an enemy uniform. Ivan, a Soviet captain hauled off for interrogation on a false denunciation, survives a bombing that wipes out his guards. A Sami woman named Anni takes both men in and nurses them at her remote farm. The catch: each speaks only his own tongue — Finnish, Russian, Sami — and none understands a word the others say. Out of that confusion Rogozhkin shapes a comedy of errors that keeps tipping into parable. Anni-Kristiina Juuso, Ville Haapasalo and Viktor Bychkov act so well that language barely matters.

To Anni the two are not enemies but simply men, and her calm, earthy good sense slowly drains the madness out of the war around them. The film picked up several Moscow Film Festival prizes and became one of the most talked-about Russian releases of its decade. It's for anyone who wants war cinema built on a quiet human gaze rather than heroics. Stream The Cuckoo (2002) online on iFILM.
