Synopsis
The Matrix (1999) is the Wachowskis' sci-fi action landmark you can watch online on iFILM. By day Thomas Anderson codes in a cubicle. By night he hacks under the handle Neo, until strangers offer him a choice between a red pill and a blue one.
The red pill rips the world open. What everyone calls reality is a simulation fed to sleeping humans while machines farm their bodies for power. Morpheus (Laurence Fishburne) is convinced Neo is the One who can break the system. Trinity (Carrie-Anne Moss) fights at his side. Hunting them is Agent Smith, played by Hugo Weaving with a flat, mocking menace that steals every scene.
This Warner Bros. picture rewrote the rules of the genre. Bullet time, cascading green code and rooftop leaps got copied and parodied for decades. It collected four Oscars, for editing, sound, sound editing and visual effects, and still asks the question that hooks viewers: how would you know if your life were fake?
