Synopsis
Dark Waters (1993) is a cult horror film from director Mariano Baino — watch it online on iFILM. Shot on location as a British-Italian-Ukrainian co-production, it runs 94 minutes and operates almost entirely without dialogue.
A young woman travels to a remote island convent in the Black Sea after her father's death, looking for an answer to a simple question: why did he fund this place for years? The nuns are blind. What the convent is devoted to emerges in fragments, and by the time the protagonist — played by Louise Salter — understands it, the island has other plans for her. Ukrainian screen legend Maria Kapnist appears as the abbess in one of her last film roles.
Baino had almost no money and used all of it on the image: dense fog, crumbling stone architecture, and a silence that presses rather than relaxes. It sits comfortably alongside the Italian Gothic tradition of Mario Bava and Lucio Fulci — genuinely unsettling rather than simply loud. Watch Dark Waters (1993) online on iFILM.
