Synopsis
Bad Boy Bubby (1993) is a pitch-black tragicomedy from Australian director Rolf de Heer, and you can watch it online on iFILM. Bubby is thirty-five with the mind of a child, locked away his whole life by a mother who swears the outside air will kill him.
A cramped flat is his entire universe — his mother, a cat, a Bible, and the dread of the front door. When his long-gone father turns up, the routine collapses and Bubby finally steps outside, into a city that makes no sense to him and to which he makes no sense either. Nicholas Hope pitches the role somewhere between horror and tenderness.
De Heer shot nearly every scene with a different cinematographer and recorded the sound binaurally, with microphones rigged by the actor's ears so we hear the world the way Bubby does. It took the Grand Special Jury Prize at Venice. This one isn't for everyone — harsh, uneasy, occasionally shocking — yet unguarded in a way few films dare.
