Kate and her boyfriend Big Al deal handguns on the street. She is sharp and composed; he is possessive and eventually violent. After Al crosses a line he cannot walk back from, Kate finds herself caught between three people pulling her in different directions: Vic, who wants to be more than a friend; Reilly (Dorff), Al's crew member who is sickened by what he sees but too deep in to walk away; and Liz, a counsellor from a domestic-abuse programme. The film is deliberately uncomfortable — it spends a long time in the space before a decision gets made, which is exactly where this kind of story lives. Jovovich plays Kate without any hint of action-hero gloss, and that restraint is what gives the film its edge.
