Synopsis
Carlos Reygadas directed Silent Light (Luz silenciosa, 2007), and you can watch it online on iFILM — a slow, almost prayerful drama about love and guilt. It unfolds among Mennonites in northern Mexico, with the characters speaking the old Plautdietsch dialect.
Johan is a devout man, a good husband and the father of a large family. He is also in love with another woman, Marianne, who runs a roadside café. He confesses it to his wife himself, but honesty spares no one any pain. There's barely any music and no hurry here: Reygadas cast real Mennonites, not actors, and holds his shots so long you start to hear the silence.
The famous sunrise that opens the film runs for minutes and is worth the wait. It took the Jury Prize at Cannes and still stands among the quietest, most piercing films about faith and betrayal. This one rewards patience. Stream Silent Light (2007) online on iFILM.
