Now 37, with a wrecked knee and a body fighting him at every step, he qualifies for the Roland-Garros qualifying rounds anyway.

His wife Eve and his mother Judith — played by Kristin Scott Thomas — both tell him to stop. He won't. Alex Lutz carries the film mostly on physicality; Ana Girardot plays the wife watching a man she loves dismantle himself. The script earns its ending by refusing the easy uplift.
