Synopsis
Harry Potter: A History of Magic (2017) is a British documentary you can watch online on iFILM. It grew out of the British Library exhibition of the same name, mounted for the twentieth anniversary of the first book about the young wizard.
The camera moves through the library's halls beside the curators as they match real objects to chapters of the saga: medieval bestiaries, antique star charts, alchemists' manuscripts, a preserved "mermaid," a broomstick said to have belonged to a witch. J.K. Rowling opens her private archive — early drafts, pencil sketches, discarded versions of whole chapters. She explains where the Philosopher's Stone, the mandrakes and the name Hogwarts came from, and where the fairy tale leans on the genuine history of magic.
Actors from the films lend their voices to the narration and inserts — Imelda Staunton, David Thewlis, Warwick Davis, Evanna Lynch, Mark Williams, Miriam Margolyes.
