Mommy Dead and Dearest
In this family, every illness was a lie - except the mother's.
Synopsis
Mommy Dead and Dearest (2017) is a documentary crime film directed by Erin Lee Carr — watch it online on iFILM. The film reconstructs one of the most unsettling abuse cases in recent American history: Gypsy-Rose Blanchard spent years in a wheelchair, underwent surgery after surgery, and genuinely believed she was dying of multiple diseases. Her mother Dee Dee was the only one who knew the full picture.
Dee Dee presented herself to the world as a devoted caregiver, raising donations and appearing at charity events with her sick daughter. Medical records told a different story — leukemia, muscular dystrophy, epilepsy, none of it real. The facade held until Gypsy found the internet, and through it, a young man named Nicholas Godejohn. In 2015, Dee Dee was found stabbed to death. The next day, Gypsy walked out of the house on her own two feet.
Carr lets the material do the work. Prison interviews with Gypsy herself, testimony from her father, doctors, and investigators build a meticulous account of Munchausen syndrome by proxy and of a system that kept missing it. The film refuses easy verdicts about guilt or victimhood — it simply shows what happened and trusts the audience to sit with the discomfort. Stream Mommy Dead and Dearest (2017) online on iFILM.
