Synopsis
The Dinner (2017) is a psychological thriller directed by Oren Moverman — watch online as four people sit down to a lavish tasting-menu meal and proceed to tear each other apart over the course of an evening. Stan Loman is a politician one step from the governor's office; his brother Paul is the difficult one, the one the family has always worked around. Their wives complete the table. Richard Gere, Steve Coogan, Laura Linney, Rebecca Hall, and Chloë Sevigny lead the ensemble.
The real reason they're there has nothing to do with the food. Their teenage sons committed a violent act together, and the footage exists. Each course brings another layer of the argument: who knows what, who's willing to cover it up, and at exactly what cost. Old grievances between the brothers keep surfacing, making it impossible to separate the parents' crisis from their own long-running one.
Adapted from Herman Koch's 2009 Dutch novel — a European bestseller — the film trusts its actors more than its plot, letting scenes breathe past the point of comfort. Moverman is more interested in what people don't say, and Coogan in particular turns in something genuinely disturbing under the sarcasm.
