Synopsis
Watch Sling Blade (1996) online on iFILM — the Southern drama that Billy Bob Thornton wrote, directed, and starred in, for which he took home the Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay.
Karl Childers spent twenty-five years in a state psychiatric institution after killing his mother and her lover at age twelve. Released into a small Arkansas town, he finds work at a repair shop and quietly befriends a boy named Frank and Frank's mother. He is gentle, deliberate, barely legible to the people around him. Then the mother's volatile, abusive boyfriend moves in, and everything Karl has carefully built starts pressing toward a reckoning. Dwight Yoakam plays the boyfriend without a trace of charm, and Robert Duvall appears in a brief scene that reframes Karl's entire past.
Thornton's film is slow and spare — no score pushing emotional cues, no cuts to tell you how to feel. What it earns is the weight of its ending, which is inevitable from the first scene and still lands hard. Stream Sling Blade on iFILM.
