Synopsis

One False Move (1991) is a crime drama directed by Carl Franklin — watch it online on iFILM. After a brutal series of murders in Los Angeles, three fugitives head east: Ray Malcolm, his girlfriend Fantasia (Cynda Williams), and an enforcer named Pluto (Michael Beach). Their route leads to Houston and then to a small Arkansas town where Fantasia grew up.

Two LAPD detectives fly ahead and link up with the local sheriff, Dale Dixon — nicknamed "Hurricane" and played by Bill Paxton. A quiet county, a quiet man: the California cops write him off as a backwoods nicety. That assumption is the film's first trap. Billy Bob Thornton, who plays one of the killers, also wrote the script, and the screenplay knows exactly how to use that misreading of small-town competence against the audience.

Franklin keeps the tension low and slow for most of the runtime, which makes the final act land much harder. What looks like a regional thriller turns out to be something closer to a tragedy about the past catching up. One False Move is one of the best American crime films of the early nineties — modest budget, outsized impact. Stream it online on iFILM.
