Synopsis
"The Ghost Breakers" (1940) is a Paramount comedy-horror you can watch online on iFILM, directed by George Marshall. Bob Hope and Paulette Goddard star in one of the studio's cleaner genre crossovers of the era — a film that figured out how to make haunted settings funny without deflating them entirely.
Mary Carter inherits a reportedly cursed mansion off the Cuban coast. A warning call arrives; she ignores it and sets sail. Stowed in her luggage: wisecracking radio announcer Larry Lawrence, played by Bob Hope as a man who knows exactly what zombies, voodoo, and crumbling Caribbean estates mean for his life expectancy and cannot stop narrating the experience anyway. Anthony Quinn plays someone with a strong personal interest in Mary never reaching the property.
Hope and Goddard were Paramount's most reliable pairing in the 1940s, and this is arguably the tightest entry they made together — better plotted than the Road pictures, with Hope at his sharpest. Stream "The Ghost Breakers" online on iFILM.
