Synopsis
Grand Theft Hamlet (2024) is a British documentary you can watch online on iFILM, and it was filmed entirely inside Grand Theft Auto Online. Two out-of-work actors decide to stage Shakespeare's Hamlet right in the crime-soaked sprawl of Los Santos.
Sam Crane and Mark Oosterveen wander the virtual city, hold auditions among random players, and rehearse the "To be or not to be" soliloquy in a place where a passing griefer might gun you down mid-line. Lockdown had emptied the theaters, so the only stage left was inside an ultra-violent game. Between the shootouts, something genuinely tender surfaces — a conversation about friendship, unemployment and why art still matters.
Directors Sam Crane and Pinny Grylls captured all of it on in-game cameras, then walked away with the top documentary prize at SXSW and a BAFTA. The film lands just as well for gamers as for people who never cared about Shakespeare; it's a rare case of GTA chaos turning into honest cinema about real people.
