Synopsis
Strong Island (2017) is Yance Ford's first-person documentary, available to watch online on iFILM. Years after his older brother William was shot dead on Long Island, Ford turns the camera on the grief and on the grand jury that let the shooter walk.
There is no narrator standing between you and the family. Ford films his mother Barbara and sister Lauren up close, then puts his own face inches from the lens to ask the hard question himself: why a white mechanic who killed an unarmed 24-year-old Black man was never charged. The answer keeps circling back to one word the law accepted as a defense — fear. The film slowly takes that word apart.
This is less reportage than a portrait of people learning to live around an absence. Ford became the first openly transgender director to reach an Oscar nomination for a feature documentary, and the film carries that weight quietly, with almost no score and a lot of silence. It rewards viewers willing to sit inside someone else's loss instead of looking away. Stream Strong Island (2017) online on iFILM.
