In 2002, a young cab driver picked up a few passengers near his home in Afghanistan... He never returned
Synopsis
Taxi to the Dark Side (2008) is a documentary you can watch online on iFILM. Director Alex Gibney opens with one name: Dilawar, a young Afghan cab driver arrested near his village in December 2002. Five days later, his family got his body back. Cause of death was ruled homicide — initially covered as cardiac failure.
Gibney uses Dilawar's case to pull apart the full US detention and interrogation apparatus that operated in Afghanistan, Iraq and Guantánamo. The film traces the chain from the soldiers who carried out abuse to the senior officials who authorised it, drawing on military records, court testimony and interviews with those involved at every level. Every claim has a source.
The film claimed the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature. Hard viewing — and hard to argue with. Stream it on iFILM.
