The whole story unspools in flashback as he talks through the interrogation — a smart inversion: you know the shape of the crime before you understand the motive. Betty Grable plays the dead girl's sister, who starts out convinced of his guilt. Carole Landis is Vicky, absent from every scene and present in all of them. Laird Cregar's detective Cornell barely raises his voice across the whole picture — just watches, waits, and makes the room feel smaller. That stillness is what the film is really about.
