Synopsis
The Nun (La Religieuse, 1967) is Jacques Rivette's drama, now available to watch online on iFILM. In 18th-century France, a young woman named Suzanne is pushed into a convent so her family can settle its money troubles.
She takes her vows under pressure, not faith, which turns every prayer into something she doesn't mean. Moved from one convent to the next, she falls under three mothers superior in turn — one warmly maternal, one coldly cruel, one quietly possessive. Suzanne never rejects God; she only refuses to obey those who hide abuse behind the habit. Anna Karina carries it all with stillness rather than outburst.
Rivette adapted Denis Diderot's novel, and French censors banned the film before it could open — the scandal made it one of the most talked-about works of the New Wave. It's slow, austere cinema built on precise tone. Stream The Nun online on iFILM.
