Synopsis
I Saw the Sun (Güneşi Gördüm, 2009) is a Turkish drama by Mahsun Kırmızıgül that you can watch online on iFILM. The director also takes one of the lead roles. The story follows the large Kurdish Altun family from a mountainside village in the country's southeast, where everyday life plays out beneath a conflict that has dragged on for a quarter of a century.
When staying becomes too dangerous, the family splits apart. Some head for Istanbul, others pay smugglers to reach Norway and end up living there on borrowed time — a supermarket job, an unfamiliar language, a suitcase always packed. Back in Istanbul there is fresh trouble: a serious operation after a difficult pregnancy, and a son who finds a new "family" among the city's trans community. Three branches of one name, three ways to lose a home.
Kırmızıgül spares the viewer nothing: this is a tearjerker built on songs and raw grief, aimed straight at migration, violence, and belonging. It's for anyone who loves big, emotional family sagas and isn't put off by heavy subject matter. Stream I Saw the Sun (2009) online on iFILM.
