Synopsis
The Turkish Gambit (2005) is a Russian period mystery you can watch online on iFILM, directed by Dzhanik Fayziev. It adapts Boris Akunin's second Erast Fandorin novel, set during the Russo-Turkish War of 1877.
Fresh out of a Turkish prison, young diplomat Erast Fandorin (Egor Beroev) races to warn the Russian command about a coming assault. On the road he falls in with Varvara Suvorova (Olga Krasko), a headstrong woman heading to the front to find her fiancé. Someone is feeding plans to the enemy from inside the Russian staff, and almost everyone is a suspect — a dashing war correspondent, decorated officers, even the generals.
Shot on a blockbuster scale rare for Russian cinema of its day, the film leans on big battle sequences and a deep ensemble cast. What sets it apart is the puzzle: the mystery turns on deduction and nerve rather than gunfire. A solid pick if you like costume detective stories with a real historical backdrop.
