Synopsis
7th Heaven (1927) is Frank Borzage's silent romance, free to watch online on iFILM. In the slums of pre-war Paris, a sewer worker named Chico has long given up on prayer. Diane is a frightened waif beaten down by her cruel older sister.
A chance rescue lands her in Chico's cramped attic, seven flights up — the garret he proudly calls his "seventh heaven." What begins as pity and a clever lie to dodge the police turns into something neither of them has ever felt. Then the war takes Chico to the front, and he leaves Diane a vow: every morning at eleven, wherever he is, his thoughts will travel to her. Janet Gaynor and Charles Farrell sell that fragile faith so fully it still lands a century later.
Borzage turned a back-alley story into a hymn to love that outlasts the trenches. At the very first Academy Awards, the film took home three prizes: Gaynor became the first woman ever to claim Best Actress, Borzage was named best director, and Benjamin Glazer picked up the adapted-screenplay award. It remains one of those silents that grip you without a single word of spoken dialogue. Stream 7th Heaven (1927) online on iFILM.
