Synopsis
The Mortal Storm (1940) is Frank Borzage's drama, free to watch online on iFILM. A close-knit village in the Bavarian Alps opens the film in calm, but the calm doesn't last: as Hitler's party takes power in Germany, neighbors who shared a dinner table start sorting one another into enemies.
Professor Roth lectures at the local university and, because of who he is, has no place in the new order. His stepdaughter Freya loves Martin, a young man who refuses to chant the slogans or pull on the uniform. Her brothers and her fiancé, meanwhile, dissolve into the marching crowd. Margaret Sullavan and James Stewart play lovers pried apart not by a quarrel but by history itself, with a young Robert Stack and Frank Morgan rounding out the household.
Released a year and a half before America entered the war, it was among the earliest Hollywood pictures to name fascism outright — and the Reich banned it on sight. Cold and refusing any comforting ending, it cuts deeper than many later films about the same years. Stream The Mortal Storm (1940) online on iFILM.
