The Promotion

The Promotion (2008) is a comedy you can watch online on iFILM. Screenwriter Steven Conrad makes his directing debut on a humble stage — a corporate Chicago supermarket — where two assistant managers wage a quiet war over a single job running a new store.

Doug (Seann William Scott) can almost picture his name on the office door; he needs the raise to buy his wife a house. Then Richard (John C. Reilly) transfers in from Canada — a polite recovering addict who plays motivational tapes and wants the same post just as badly. From there it's a trade of small betrayals, awkward staff meetings, and the steady absurdity of retail life. Jenna Fischer and Lily Taylor round out the cast.

This is an observational comedy rather than a loud one — closer to gentle satire about a little guy boxed in by corporate rules than to farce. Scott plays it quieter than usual, and the contrast with Reilly's trademark softness pays off. Worth a look if you like low-key humor about work and the people stuck in it.
