Synopsis
Moonfleet (1955) is Fritz Lang's adventure drama, available to watch online on iFILM. It unfolds along the smuggler-ridden Dorset coast of eighteenth-century England, a world of crumbling manors and a legend about a cursed diamond. Lang shot it in widescreen CinemaScope, adapting the novel by John Meade Falkner.
The orphan John Mohune arrives in the village of Moonfleet carrying a letter from his late mother to her old flame — the dashing rogue Jeremy Fox (Stewart Granger). Fox wants no part of raising a child; he runs a smuggling gang and lives a double life. The stubborn boy decides Fox is his friend anyway, and the man's hard edges slowly soften. Together they chase a treasure that, by local lore, John's ancestor sold his soul to possess.
Lang, the great noir stylist, brings his shadows and moral grey into a costume adventure: the hero here is neither saint nor villain but caught somewhere between. George Sanders adds icy menace as a scheming local aristocrat. An underrated entry from a major director, made for anyone who loves old swashbucklers with some grit.
