The Pale Horse (Season 1)

The Pale Horse (2020) is a British mystery miniseries based on Agatha Christie's novel, and you can watch it online on iFILM. Across two BBC episodes, Mark Easterbrook (Rufus Sewell) finds his own name on a list hidden inside a dead woman's shoe.

Everyone else on that list is already dead or about to be. The trail leads to a village inn called The Pale Horse, home to three women the locals whisper are witches — said to kill any chosen target from a distance, for the right price. Easterbrook doesn't believe in curses, yet the names keep getting crossed off, one by one.

Writer Sarah Phelps reshapes Christie to her own taste: less cozy puzzle, more dread, paranoia and things left unsaid. Sewell plays a man no longer sure he isn't losing his grip, with Kaya Scodelario as his wary wife. The ending splits viewers right down the middle, which may be the best thing about it.
