Synopsis
The Lost World (1925) is Harry O. Hoyt's silent adventure, free to watch online on iFILM. It was the first screen version of Arthur Conan Doyle's novel and the very first feature film to put living dinosaurs in front of an audience. Professor Challenger insists that on a hidden plateau deep in the Amazon, creatures from prehistory are still very much alive.
A reporter named Edward Malone signs up for the expedition to prove himself worthy of the woman he loves. A doubting scientist, a big-game hunter and the daughter of a lost explorer come along. The plateau answers with sheer cliffs, pterodactyls circling overhead, and a brontosaurus tearing into an allosaurus a stone's throw from camp. Then the one bridge out collapses, and the party is stranded in a world that forgot people ever existed.
The stop-motion beasts came from Willis O'Brien, the animator who would bring King Kong to life eight years later; no Lost World, no Kong, and arguably no century of monster cinema. Bessie Love, Lewis Stone and a heavily made-up Wallace Beery as the short-fused Challenger anchor the human side. Watch it to see where the whole genre began: clunky, wildly ambitious, and weirdly charming for something this old. Stream The Lost World (1925) online on iFILM.
