Synopsis

The Time Machine (1960) is a landmark science-fiction film you can watch online on iFILM, adapted from H.G. Wells's 1895 novel by director and producer George Pal, who took home the Academy Award for Best Special Effects for his trouble.

On New Year's Eve 1899, a Victorian inventor named George fires up his device and hurtles through the 20th century — past two world wars — all the way to the year 802,701. What he finds is a world split between the Eloi, who live on the surface in comfortable, uncurious passivity, and the Morlocks, pale creatures below ground who cultivated that passivity for reasons George only gradually works out. Rod Taylor plays George with a physical directness that grounds the film even when the sets go full pulp; Yvette Mimieux as Weena gives the far-future storyline its emotional stakes.

Pal built the time travel sequence — accelerating seasons, crumbling civilisations — with practical effects that still read as inventive rather than dated. As a piece of cinema history, the film sits at the origin of nearly every time-travel story that followed it. Stream The Time Machine (1960) online on iFILM.
