Synopsis
Vizontele (2001) is a Turkish comedy-drama you can watch online on iFILM — directed by Yılmaz Erdoğan and Ömer Faruk Sorak, set in the remote southeastern town of Hakkari in the early 1970s. The first television set has just arrived. Nobody knows what to make of it — including the word: locals twist "television" into "vizontele" and the name sticks.
The mayor sees the device as proof that progress has finally reached them. His neighbours range from sceptical to actively opposed. Erdoğan, who also wrote the screenplay and acts in the film, layers quiet provincial sadness beneath the comedy — the Hakkari setting is real, and the television story is drawn from local memory. Cem Yılmaz adds sharp comic energy in a supporting role.
The film broke box-office records in Turkey at the time of release and established Erdoğan as a filmmaker worth watching. Stream Vizontele online on iFILM.
