Synopsis
A Thousand and One Nights (千夜一夜物語, 1969) is a Japanese animated fantasy you can watch online on iFILM, directed by Eiichi Yamamoto. Aldin, a vagabond water seller in Baghdad, steals a woman named Miriam from a slave market — and that one impulsive act pulls him into a chain of adventures that runs from comic to genuinely dark.
The film was produced at Osamu Tezuka's Mushi Production studio as the first entry in the Animerama trilogy — a series of adult-oriented animated features that used the Arabian Nights as a frame rather than a source. What Yamamoto drew from it was atmosphere: the Middle East as a space of desire, power, and loss, where nothing stays won for long.
Comedian and future politician Yukio Aoshima voices Aldin; actress Kyoko Kishida voices Miriam. In 1969, this was a genuine break with what anime was allowed to be. Stream A Thousand and One Nights (1969) online on iFILM.
