Synopsis
Bob Ross: Happy Accidents, Betrayal & Greed (2021) is Joshua Rofé's documentary, available to watch online on iFILM. The man with the perm, the soft voice and the "happy little trees" soothed millions through the television screen. Off camera, his name and legacy became the prize in a bitter fight over money.
The film runs on two tracks. One is a fond portrait of the painter who popularized the wet-on-wet technique and the show The Joy of Painting. The other is what unfolded after he died in 1995: a struggle over who would own the brand, the brushes, and the right to profit from Ross's face. His son Steve sits down on camera to describe how the family was left with almost nothing while business partners turned his father into an empire.
Rofé isn't chasing scandal for its own sake — this is a melancholy account of kindness repackaged as merchandise. It runs 92 minutes, produced by Melissa McCarthy. A good pick for anyone who likes Netflix docs about gentle people and the loud corporate wars waged in their name. Stream Bob Ross: Happy Accidents, Betrayal & Greed (2021) online on iFILM.
