Synopsis
Time Regained (Le Temps retrouvé, 1999) is a film you can watch online on iFILM — Chilean director Raúl Ruiz's adaptation of the final volume of Marcel Proust's In Search of Lost Time, which competed at Cannes that year. The cast alone: Catherine Deneuve, Emmanuelle Béart, John Malkovich, Chiara Mastroianni, and Marcello Mazzarella as Proust himself.
Early 1920s France. Marcel lies dying, surrounded by photographs, as memory after memory breaks over him. Deneuve is Odette; Malkovich plays the Baron de Charlus, aristocratic and self-deceiving to the end; Béart appears as Gilberte, glimpsed across decades. Ruiz doesn't adapt the plot — there isn't much of one in Proust — but the architecture of how Proustian time works: past moments surfacing sharper than the present room, with no clear boundary between then and now.
For viewers expecting a conventional literary film, this is a demanding 163 minutes. For those willing to let it wash over them rather than follow it like a story, it remains one of the most honest attempts at putting involuntary memory on screen. Watch Time Regained (1999) online on iFILM.
