Synopsis
Pastoral: To Die in the Country (田園に死す, 1974) is a Japanese avant-garde drama you can watch online on iFILM. A filmmaker hits a wall on his new project, an attempt to rebuild his own adolescence in a mountain village in rural Japan. That creative block is where the film begins.
From there, the line between memory and invention dissolves. A wandering circus, a mother he longs to escape, an older neighbor, a backwater steeped in ritual and superstition, all surface in fragments, more like a dream than a plot.
