Synopsis
Pastoral: To Die in the Country (田園に死す, 1974) is a Japanese avant-garde drama you can watch online on iFILM. A filmmaker hits a wall on his new project, an attempt to rebuild his own adolescence in a mountain village in rural Japan. That creative block is where the film begins.
From there, the line between memory and invention dissolves. The grown artist literally travels back to speak with his fifteen-year-old self, only to find that memory is unstable, something you can rewrite, fake, or live over again. A wandering circus, a mother he longs to escape, an older neighbor, a backwater steeped in ritual and superstition, all surface in fragments, more like a dream than a plot.
It comes from Shuji Terayama, poet, provocateur and a central figure of Japan's underground scene. This is not background viewing: dense, symbolic, bursting with color and theatrical imagery, closer to a visual poem than a conventional drama. A perfect entry point for arthouse fans ready to let go of linear storytelling. Stream Pastoral: To Die in the Country (1974) online on iFILM.
