About

Synopsis

Gulliver's Travels (1996) is a British-American miniseries from Jonathan Swift's novel — watch online on iFILM. Ted Danson plays ship's surgeon Lemuel Gulliver, who comes home after years away looking wrecked and raving about places no one believes exist.

The story runs on two tracks. In the present, his wife Mary (Mary Steenburgen) is pressured to commit him while a rival doctor is only too glad to lock him up. In flashback, the impossible comes to life: the tiny Lilliputians who pin him down with a hundred ropes, the giants who treat him as a pet, a flying island of distracted scientists, and a land where horses reason and humans have gone feral. Swift's bite survives the adventure — every wonder doubles as a jab at human nature.

Director Charles Sturridge assembled a cast most features only dream of: Peter O'Toole, John Gielgud, Omar Sharif, Kristin Scott Thomas, Geraldine Chaplin and Warwick Davis. Two parts, five Emmy wins, effects that held up well for the mid-nineties. This is the rare adaptation that bothers to film all four voyages instead of stopping at Lilliput.
