Synopsis
A Touch of Spice (Politiki Kouzina, 2003) is the Greek-Turkish tragicomedy you can watch online on iFILM, written and directed by Tassos Boulmetis. In Istanbul, young Fanis learns from his grandfather, a spice merchant and gentle philosopher, that a dish and a life both need a little seasoning to taste of anything at all.
Cinnamon and cumin become the boy's vocabulary for love, homesickness and belonging. As an adult, played by Georges Corraface, Fanis is a cook who keeps flavoring everyone else's life while letting his own go bland. Decades later he travels back to Istanbul, to his aging grandfather and the girl he once adored.
Boulmetis drew on his own family's expulsion from Turkey in the 1960s, and the film keeps bitterness and sweetness in the same spoon, exactly as the tagline promises. It became one of the highest-grossing Greek films ever and traveled the festival circuit. Best suited to anyone who loves warm, faintly melancholy stories about food, memory and home.
