About

Synopsis

Toast (2010) — watch online the British biographical drama directed by SJ Clarkson and based on celebrity chef Nigel Slater's memoir of the same name. Freddie Highmore plays young Nigel growing up in late-1950s Wolverhampton with a mother whose cooking begins and ends at singed toast. When she dies, his father (Ken Stott) brings home a cleaner named Joan — played by Helena Bonham Carter — who can actually cook.

Joan's lemon meringue pie wins the father over completely. Nigel fights back the only way available to him: he starts learning to cook. The film turns a kitchen into a battlefield, and the food into something closer to a last plea for attention from a man who barely notices his son.

What makes Toast stick is that it never plays as a simple triumph-of-talent story. The longing underneath the cooking scenes is what you remember. Stream Toast (2010) online on iFILM.
