Mr. First arrives in the frontier town of Santa Carolina with a white sheet, a projector, and a collection of silent films. The town runs on gunfights and foul language. He sets up his screen and shows them a movie. Something shifts. Hardened cowboys weep at love scenes. A brawler goes to the library. The transformation doesn't last — but it happened.

Mironov died that same year, which gives his performance here a quiet extra weight. Surikova built a genuinely funny film around him, but underneath the comedy is a straight argument: cinema makes people better, if only for a little while.
