Only Old Men Are Going to Battle (1974) is a Soviet war film by Leonid Bykov — watch it online on iFILM. Bykov wrote, directed, and starred as Captain Titarenko, who commands a front-line fighter squadron nicknamed "the singing one" for the guitar sessions squeezed in between combat sorties. New recruits, barely out of accelerated flight school, are kept on the ground — they're too raw to fly a real mission.
Made at the Dovzhenko Film Studio in Kyiv, the picture deliberately skips every scene a Soviet war epic was supposed to deliver: no generals, no war rooms, no triumphant marches. Rustem Sagdullayev, Sergei Ivanov, Volodymyr Talashko, and Yevgenia Simonova play the young pilots. Each registers immediately. Bykov keeps the humor low-key and the losses quiet — which is exactly what makes the combination land.
The film became one of the most-watched Soviet releases of its era and has stayed there. Bykov died in 1979, and this remains his lasting work — not a film about heroism, but about the specific texture of people sharing a dangerous and very temporary life.
