The city is busy with fair preparations — merchants arriving, money moving, the usual trade-season noise. Then the province's most powerful nobleman turns up dead. Gubernatorial marshal Nefedyev, the wealthiest man in the region. Investigator Aleksey Lykov takes the case, and the further he digs, the less it looks like a simple crime of greed.
