Synopsis

The film spans decades in the life of one of the twentieth century's most performed composers — a man who wrote symphonies inside a system that could condemn him by morning. His opera Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk District was torn apart in Pravda in January 1936; his Fourth Symphony went into a drawer the same year, unperformed for a quarter century. The Seventh made him a wartime symbol. The 1948 decree came down again anyway. What Uchitel focuses on is not the biography as a triumph arc but as an exercise in calibration: what you play, what you sign, what you protect at any cost.
