Synopsis
Copying Beethoven (2006), directed by Agnieszka Holland, is available to watch online on iFILM. The film is set in 1824 Vienna: Beethoven is racing to finish the Ninth Symphony, deaf, exhausted, and years past his last triumph.
His publishers send a copyist — Anna Holtz (Diane Kruger), a young conservatory student who has never worked at this scale. Ed Harris plays Beethoven as ferociously difficult company, resistant to help and allergic to politeness. Anna arrives to take dictation and ends up catching mistakes the composer himself missed in the rush. Matthew Goode co-stars. Holland is less interested in the genius myth than in the actual working relationship — the friction, the dependency, the fragile thing that forms between two very different people over weeks of shared work.
