Synopsis
Immortal Beloved (1994) is a biographical drama you can watch online on iFILM, directed by Bernard Rose and anchored by Gary Oldman's raw performance as Ludwig van Beethoven. Running 121 minutes, the film frames its story around a single mystery: the identity of the unnamed woman Beethoven addressed in his unsent love letters.
After the composer's death in 1827, his devoted secretary Schindler sets out to trace her, interviewing the women who passed through Beethoven's turbulent life. The investigation unspools in flashback — a young man burning with ambition in Vienna, a middle-aged musician whose encroaching deafness turned him inward and savage, and a series of relationships wrecked by his own impossible demands. Jeroen Krabbé plays Schindler, Isabella Rossellini appears as Countess Guicciardi, and Valeria Golino takes the role of Giulietta. The Ninth Symphony sequence near the end is one of the more striking uses of classical music on film.
Rose keeps the film grounded in biography rather than hagiography — Beethoven here is difficult, jealous, frequently unbearable, and the mystery of who he truly loved turns out to say as much about loneliness as it does about devotion. Stream Immortal Beloved (1994) online on iFILM.
