Synopsis
Father and Daughter (2001) is a wordless animated short you can watch online on iFILM, directed by Michael Dudok de Wit across a co-production between Belgium, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom. It runs eight minutes. A father says goodbye to his young daughter by a river, rows out, and disappears. She stands at the top of the hill and watches.
The film follows her across a whole life — seasons pass, she grows up, ages — and she keeps coming back to that same stretch of river. No dialogue, no score that tells you where to feel. Dudok de Wit's hand-drawn flat landscapes do everything. It took home the Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film and the BAFTA in the same category.
