Synopsis
Bau, Artist at War (2024) is a historical drama you can watch online on iFILM, directed by Sean McNamara. It draws on the real life of Polish artist Joseph Bau, the man who married his sweetheart inside the Płaszów camp the Nazis ran near Kraków.
Emile Hirsch plays the young draughtsman whose pen turns out to be worth more than gold. By forging papers he slips hundreds of prisoners out to safety, and amid all that horror he falls for Rebecca (Inbar Lavi). Decades later he is summoned to testify against the SS officer who tortured him and murdered his father, and the courtroom drags every memory back into the light.
The story comes straight from Bau's own memoir; he went on to become a celebrated animator in Israel. This is not a film about grand heroism but about how a drawing and a love can keep one person whole. It will land with anyone drawn to Holocaust stories told through a single life.
