Synopsis
Between the Temples (2024) is a bittersweet comedy you can watch online on iFILM, directed by Nathan Silver. Ben is a synagogue cantor who lost his voice along with his wife. Grief has rattled his faith, he can no longer sing at services, and his life has stalled.
Things shift when a new student walks in: Carla (Carol Kane), his old grade-school music teacher, who now wants Ben to prepare her for the Bat Mitzvah she never had. An awkward, tender, wildly inappropriate bond forms between two lost souls — and horrifies both their families. Jason Schwartzman plays Ben with his trademark jittery unease.
Shot on grainy 16mm and built largely out of improvisation, Silver's film premiered at Sundance and runs on the spiky chemistry between Schwartzman and Kane.
