Synopsis
The Blonde Around the Corner (1984) is a Soviet tragicomedy by Vladimir Bortko that you can watch online on iFILM. Nikolai, an astrophysicist, has spent fifteen years hunting for extraterrestrial life and turned up nothing. Disillusioned, he quits his research institute and takes a job hauling crates at an ordinary grocery store.
There he meets Nadezhda, a sharp, fast-talking saleswoman from the food section — the very blonde he used to notice every morning at the bus stop. Nadezhda has her own scheme: she's bet a coworker she can "make a real man" out of even the most hopeless case, and her dreamy new colleague becomes the target. A world of shortages, connections and back-room deals collides with a man who lives with his head in the stars, and the clash turns into a wry, very precise comedy about the late USSR.
Andrei Mironov and Tatyana Dogileva lead the cast, with Elena Solovei and Evgenia Khanaeva alongside. Mironov plays close to the edge here, real weariness showing under the lightness — for many viewers it's one of his most surprising roles. The film reached audiences only after censors' cuts, yet its satire of a transactional society still lands.
