Synopsis
Andriesh (1954) marks Sergei Parajanov's feature debut, a folk fantasy you can watch online on iFILM. A young shepherd named Andriesh dreams of becoming a knight, and the hero Vainovan gives him a magic flute.
The evil wizard Black Whirlwind, who hates every living thing, carries off the boy's flock and his faithful dog Lupar. Andriesh sets out after them toward the sorcerer's castle, and along the way the flute helps not only him but everyone the Whirlwind has long terrorized. The plot comes from a Moldovan fairy tale by Emilian Bukov.
Parajanov co-directed with Yakov Bazelyan, long before his name became shorthand for Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors. It's bright, naive and steeped in folklore, and you can already sense the imagery the director would later be known for. Stream Andriesh (1954) online on iFILM.
