Synopsis
The Good Soldier Švejk (Dobrý voják Švejk, 1957) is a Czech wartime comedy you can watch online on iFILM, adapted from Jaroslav Hašek's celebrated novel about a little man ground up by a big war.
Josef Švejk, a cheerful Prague dog dealer once discharged from the army for idiocy, gets his papers again — this time as cannon fodder for the front lines of World War I. Talkative, irrepressible and disarmingly simple, he shuffles obediently toward battle, handed from bureaucrats to police to clergy to officers. Yet his eager obedience keeps detonating in his superiors' faces, and somehow he never quite arrives where the shooting is.
Rudolf Hrušínský plays him so well you can't tell whether he's a fool or the cleverest man in the empire, mocking the whole war machine by taking every order at face value. Directed by Karel Steklý, it remains a cornerstone of Czech cinema and arguably the definitive screen Švejk. Stream The Good Soldier Švejk (1957) online on iFILM.
