Synopsis
Cosy Dens (Pelíšky, 1999) is a Czech tragicomedy from director Jan Hřebejk, and you can watch online on iFILM. One house in Prague, two feuding families, and the winter before everything changed.
Downstairs lives Šebek, a career army officer who genuinely believes in the Party and the socialist future. Just down the hall is old Kraus, a resistance veteran who loathes the regime with his whole stubborn heart. The fathers wage their war at the dinner table, arguing over spoons, radio sets, and whose version of the truth is real. Their kids care about none of it: teenage Michal pines for the neighbour girl Jindřiška, she keeps looking elsewhere, and the grown-ups' ideological battle strikes them as a ridiculous show. The story moves toward the turn of 1967 into 1968, and we already know what the characters do not.
Hřebejk laces absurd comedy with quiet grief, so the laughter in the final scene catches in your throat. Generations of Czechs quote it by heart, and almost everyone recognises that one impossible neighbour. Stream Cosy Dens (1999) online on iFILM.
