Synopsis
The Lost Letter (Propala hramota, 1972) is a Ukrainian folk fantasy-comedy you can watch online on iFILM. Boris Ivchenko directed it loosely from a Nikolai Gogol tale in the "Evenings on a Farm Near Dikanka" cycle, with Ivan Mykolaichuk in the lead.
A swaggering Cossack named Vasyl agrees to carry the hetman's letter all the way to the empress in St. Petersburg. The road turns into one long, tipsy misadventure — a fair, a drinking bout, a sly Zaporozhian sidekick — and then the precious letter simply vanishes. Devils and witches, it seems, have had a hand in it, and Vasyl will have to win it back at the card table against the Evil One himself.
What you get is a loud, colorful slice of folk theater: songs, the hopak, Gogol's sly humor, and a flavor of old rural Ukraine that fans keep coming back for. Light, easy viewing with no heavy moral attached. Stream The Lost Letter (1972) online on iFILM.
